"Are you Jesus?"

A group of men went to a regional sales convention in Chicago. They had assured their wives that they would be home in time for Friday night's dinner. One thing led to another, however, and the meeting ran over its alloted time.

Their scheduled departure to leave Chicago was very rushed, so they raced through the terminal to board transportation home. In their frantic rush (with jackets, tickets, and brief-cases flying), one of these salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of baskets (of apples)…fruit went flying everywhere.

Without stopping (and hardly glancing back), they all managed to get on board for the trip home…that is; all but one. He paused, took deep breath, thought about what happened and felt compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned.

He told his buddies to go on without him, waved goodbye, asked one of them to call his wife when they arrived home and explain his delay. Then he returned to the terminal where the apples were all over the floor. He was glad he did. The young girl was blind! She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks, and at the same time groping for the spilled produce as the crowd swirled around her… no one stopping and no one caring.

The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them into the baskets, and helped set up the display. As he did this, he noticed that many of the apples had been bruised…these he set aside in another basket. When he had finished, he took out his
wallet and said, "Here, please take this $20 for the damage we did. Are you okay?" She nodded through her tears, as he continued with, "I hope we didn't spoil your day too badly."

As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called out to him, "Mister..." he paused and turned back. She asked, "Are you Jesus?"

He stopped mid-stride, and thought about her reply. He then slowly he made his way to board transportation home, with that question burning in his heart, "Are you Jesus?"

So we ask ourselves: Would anyone mistake us for Jesus? To act, to talk, or to treat our fellow human beings so much like the Lord (that people cannot tell the difference), should be our only goal. As we live and interact with a world that is blind to God’s grace and the love of Christ, let us (by the power of the Spirit) make a difference (in someone’s life). If we claim to know God, we should live, walk and talk like His child. Knowing God is more than quoting scripture and going to church. It is living the Word (every day).
