Triune God

The Trinity is unique and is irreplaceable by any other plan in bringing about the salvation of sinners.  The Trinity is an important doctrine so we must ask God to enlighten our mind to how this divine plan is able to save our soul because it can be accomplished in no other way.

The Bible teaches that within the nature of the one true God, exists three separate Persons—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  All three are co-equal in nature.  The Trinity is not three gods in one, but one God in three persons.  The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit work as one to offer a practical plan of salvation to anyone who is willing to believe in faith.

God the Father-First Person  There is only one true God Deuteronomy 6:4 “The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”  YHWH (Elohim) is a Hebrew word [echod] that means compound unity—as two people become one Genesis 2:24.  The Trinity is singular in person—Jesus said Mark 12:29, "The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one,” and plural in nature Genesis 1:26 ”God said, ‘Let us make man in our image.’”

God the Father is the first person of the Trinity and controls all things according to His divine will and sovereign purpose.  Job 42:2 "I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.”  Psalm 145:8 “The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.”  1 Corinthians 8:6 “We know that there is only one God, the Father, who created everything, and we exist for him.”

This one God whom we love and worship and trust in faith is the Creator of everything.  Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”  Ephesians 3:9 “God, who created all things.”  Ephesians 4:5-6 There is “One Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

God is in control of all circumstances in the world and eventually everything will bring glory to Him.  1 Chronicles 29:11 “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours.  Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.”  A multitude shouts Revelation 19:6 "Hallelujah!  For our Lord God Almighty reigns.”

God will forgive the sins of all those who come to Him in the sincerity of their heart and place a believing faith on the atonement sacrifice of His Son Jesus.  John 1:12 “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”  Romans 8:15You received the Spirit of sonship.  And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

Jesus Christ the Son-Second Person  The Son possesses all the divine attributes of the Father.  Jesus is co-equal and co-eternal with God.  John 10:30 “I and the Father are one."  Jesus answered Philip John 14:9 "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”  Matthew 28:18 "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

God the Father created “the heavens and the earth and all that is in them” according to His own will and through His own Son by whom all things came into existence.  John 1:3 “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”  Colossians 1:15-17 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.  He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

In His living form, the eternally-existing second Person of the Trinity accepted all the characteristics of humanity and became God in human form.  Colossians 2:9 “In Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.”  Philippians 2:6-7 Jesus, “being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”  He appeared as a man, so He could die on the cross.

Jesus was born of a virgin and represents both humanity and divinity.  John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

The divine purpose of the Incarnation was for Jesus to reveal God to the world, to redeem those lost in sin, to judge unrepentant sinners, and to rule God’s kingdom forever.  Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

On the basis of the effectiveness and value of the shed blood of Christ, the believing sinner is free from the punishment, penalty, and power of sin, so they are declared righteous.  At that point they possess eternal life and are acceptable to God.  Romans 3:25 “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.”  1 Peter 2:24 “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”

His Resurrection from the dead enables Jesus to justify us before God.  He has ascended into heaven to take His position at God’s right hand so He can serve as our Advocate.  God promised King David “on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne” Acts 2:30, so 1 John 2:1 “If anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.”

God confirmed the deity of His Son and He accepted His sacrifice for sin by bringing Him back to life Acts 2:24.  Jesus will be the Judge of everyone who fails to believe Him and place a trusting faith in Him.  God commands everyone to repent, “For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed.  He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead" Acts 17:31.

The Holy Spirit-Third Person God’s Spirit is a Person who is eternal and possesses all the attributes of deity like intellect, personality, emotion and will.  John 14:26 “The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”  In regard to spiritual gifts the apostle said 1 Corinthians 12:11 “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.”

The Holy Spirit enables us to live by faith, enlightens us to God’s truth, convicts us when we go astray, and inspires us to place a trusting faith in the atonement of Christ.  The Holy Spirit was promised by the Son and given by the Father at Pentecost Acts 2:4 ”All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

Jesus said it would be best if He went back to heaven so He could send His Spirit to be with us and within us wherever they would be in the world.  “And when he comes, he will convince the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment” John 16:8.

The Holy Spirit is received when a person believes in Christ.  We are then inspired to place a trusting faith in Christ.  Romans 8:9-10 “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.  And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.  But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.

11-14 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.  Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation--but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it.  For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

The Holy Spirit does not glorify Himself, but always inspires the believer to glorify the Father and the Son.  The Spirit helps us increase our faith, and He protects us from false teaching.  Jude 1:20 “You, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.  Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.”

The salvation of true believers includes the work of all three Persons of the Trinity.  God the Father loves His creation and wants to save them.  Since those He created made the choice to sin, and to separate themselves from Him, a sacrifice for sin had to be offered.  God the Son never sinned and was willing to make the perfect sacrifice for everyone who would be willing to believe and trust Him in faith.

God the Spirit now lives in the heart of the believer to enable them to remain faithful in trusting God for all life issues—healing, protection, finances, enlightenment and eternal life.  We must run the Christian race by faith to the end of our life.  The apostle endured severe persecution and he experienced every test of faith imaginable, but by the grace of God he was able to say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy 4:7.  The Three-in-One worked as One to save his soul.
